Dear Au Pair Letter:
We are looking for an au pair to replace our lovely Italian au pair who is leaving us later this year. We need a single person (no couples) who has the right to work as an au pair in the UK - either because they are from the EU or already have a student visa which allows them to work.
We need someone who has experience of young children and enjoys being with them. Perhaps you come from a big family, or have nieces or nephews you looked after, or you have been an au pair before. We also need someone who is easy going and enthusiastic for new experiences. It is very important that our au pair will commit to staying for at least a year.
We have two children: a girl who is 6 and a boy who will be 9 in December. They are both kind and are used to helping au pairs settle in.
We are a friendly family who live in zone 2 of London (12 min by train to Trafalgar Square and on the overground) in a multicultural area with lots of au pairs who I can introduce you to. We are walking distance from Greenwich and there are lots of local language schools including one that costs very little (currently £25 a term) where our current and previous au pair studied. Lewisham college is nearby if you'd be interested in studying something other than English
We believe in eating together and so there will be lots of opportunities to practice your English with adults as well as the children, and you would be welcome to join us for activities at the weekend (but also free to go out with your friends if you preferred).
Both parents work and dad is sometimes away Monday to Friday.
The mother is vegetarian although the rest of the family eats meat. An au pair who is interested in eating healthily would fit in most easily with our lifestyle.
You would be expected to get the children ready for school and drop them off in the morning (7.45am - 9.15) and to collect them after school and play with them or take them to activities or the park until I get home from work. (3.15 - 6pm) Someone who can help with the cooking would be preferable - or who could at least heat up meals I have cooked and prepare vegetables.
We would also expect you to tidy up with the children after meals, help them tidy their rooms, and do some ironing for the family. We have a cleaner who comes once a week to clean, but your room would be your responsibility.
We would also prefer someone who is happy for the children to have friends over after school (our current au pair often arranges for friends to come over). Very occasionally if a child is sick you might have to look after them in the day - and in the holidays I might ask you to do some full days of childcare but then would give you full days off.
We would also expect babysitting upto 2 nights a week (although we rarely go out more than 2 times in a month). This might be a Saturday or Friday night with prior arrangement.
We are happy for our au pairs to take on additional part time work as long as it doesn't interfere with them being our au pair and could pay the costs of a first aid course and a childcare course (which takes place over 2-3 weekends) if you were interested in doing that in order to have a UK qualification.
We prefer someone who intends to studying either English or another course as we find they tend to be happier and make friends more quickly
Please don;t contact me until early Feb 2012 as I won't be looking before then. I look forward to hearing from you
