What Au Pair means?

Au Pair is an interesting program and has dual purpose

Get childcare for families
Give experience to young people.

Now that is the official version. A version closer to reality would be “a good way to get this area of the market covered”. It is good for both parties: families get cheap childcare enabling them to go to work and earn and young people get to know the culture of the host country thus spreading it. They get their resources called “pocket money” and that gives them a little bit of financial freedom to explore.

Au Pair means that you will have to work. If you think that the host family will do the job for you then you’ll better stay home.

Usually “Dear Au Pair” letter says something about light housework on top of the childcare. So how light is this housework? For a mum or dad hovering or ironing it is light housework because they are used to it after couple of years. For a young person doing the job can prove easy but to remember to do it – that is the tricky bit.

So if you accept the thought that you will have chores and you are okay doing them than you can be an Au Pair. If you cannot and you will not learn how to do something better to say that from the very beginning but to lie in order to get the job is a very bad idea and usually ends up in a split.

As a conclusion Au Pair means going to work for a family, earn some money and almost all the time to study the language in a language school.
