- Allowed Au Pair age: 18 to 26

Belgium has some of the most restrictive conditions for an Au Pair placement. These conditions must be met by both parties for the authorities to issue a temporary residence permit;

Au Pair's conditions:
- be aged over 18 years old and under 26 years old
- cannot have another job
- provide a valid certificate of studies until at least 17 years old
- must speak host family's language at least at a basic level
- have to take language classes to learn the language of the host family during this period
- is not granted a Belgian work permit

Family's conditions:
- provide a separate room for the Au Pair
- provide health insurance for the Au Pair
- give at least one full rest day per week
- give a minimum of 110 Euro per week
- must have at least one child under 13 years
- if has children under 6 then proof of day care is required
- provide authorities with characters reference about family's adults
- agree to give access to authorities to their house for monitoring the placement
- provide insurance for the case of early repatriation and agree to cover the costs of early repatriation

Certain steps must be completed before starting the placement:

1.Before arrival a permit request must be submitted by the host family. After approval a work permit is issued by the immigration service. This work permit (type B) is issued for the use of the au pair and is non transferable.
2.The au pair applies for a temporary residence permit at the Belgian embassy. Documents needed are passport, a character reference for the last 5 years, a medical certificate issued by an approved doctor and the work permit issued
